Tesla is a vehicle manufacturing company specializing in battery powered cars. It was founded in 2003 in San Carlos, CA by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Tesla revealed their first vehicle to the public in July 2006. The unveiling ceremony was an invitation only event and included only 350 guests. In 2004, Paypal founder Elon Musk came on board. Musk was the first to receive a Tesla Roadster in February 2008.
The company was named after the engineer and physicist, Nikola Tesla. Tesla is not the first electric vehicle, but it is the first electric sports car on the market. The Tesla Roadster uses an AC motor which was developed based directly on Nikola Tesla’s 1882 design.
Tesla automobiles are powered pretty simply- with a battery. They are not much unlike your cell phone or laptop, their battery is just much more powerful. Tesla technicians advise that owners install a recharging station in their home. You plug the High Power Wall Charger into the back of the car and allow it to reach a full charge, which takes around 3 and a half hours. A full charge will allow you to drive the vehicle for up to 244 miles. A mobile charging kit is also available, allowing you to recharge the car wherever electricity is available.
Because the car is not gas powered, it doesn’t require a lot of the maintenance that a regular automobile would. For example, it does not need regular oil changes. They don’t have tailpipe emissions, therefore no muffler or exhaust system work is required. Service on the car is recommended every 12,000 miles or once a year. Because the vehicle has fewer breakable moving parks, there are less items to regularly replace. Tesla vehicles come with a standard 3 year 36,000 factory warranty.
The Tesla S was recently awarded the 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year Award. The S model received a unanimous vote from the panel of Motor Trend judges- this is the first time every judge was ever in agreement, which says a lot! Tesla has also placed 10th in Consumer Reports Brand Perception Survey. The survey weighed things like how customers perceive automotive brands in key categories such as quality, safety, value, and environmental friendliness. Tesla’s sedan is also named one of the best inventions by Time Magazine for 2012. Yahoo! Autos chose the Model S as car of the year for 2013. Automobile Magazine awarded it he same title.
With all these awards, its obvious Tesla is doing something right. The face of the auto industry is changing, and its very likely Tesla will play an influential role in this transition. Its interesting to wonder what Nikola Tesla would make of the vehicle. We can only imagine that he would be very pleased with Tesla’s increasing success.
